If you feel like being kind to your wallet, and dining in some cuisine full of homey goodness, Flavvors might be your answer. Priced extremely affordably, this new outlet which opened its doors on 15 June 2010 has an unpretentious setting which still provides diners with a comfortable ambience. The concept that the restaurant has implemented is similar to that of Hongkong cafés that have sprouted throughout Singapore; one has to write down your requests on an order chit to be handed over to the staff.  Thankfully, the service staff are rather attentive so there is no frustration upon having to flail the order chit in a dramatic fashion just to capture their attention. It helps that the prices are pocket-friendly, as it gives fickle-minded and self-confessed gluttons the choice to go crazy ordering appetisers, side dishes and the like in addition to a main course.

For example, the mushroom with pork rib soup costs only $3.00 and comes with approximately three pieces of tender ribs boiled with patience such that the cartilage delightfully melts in your mouth. The soup is also packed with an earthy flavour contributed from the mushrooms. If you’re feeling naughty and absolutely need to have something fried, try the golden mushrooms with cereal for $4.50. Crisp batter accompanied by with malty cereal and fragrant curry leaves, this is a dish that has to be shared for it is a tad cloying if taken in excess. A less sinful option for those who enjoy appetisers would be the fried Shanghai dumplings. Lightly pan-fried on one side and accompanied with a piquant vinegar dip and ginger strips, it is the perfect dish which will satisfy your tummy, and yet whet your appetite. The black olive and Chinese sausage fried rice might not look too alluring from the photos due to its dark outlook, but don’t let the images fool you. The rice beads are moist and there is a nice scattering of the olives, Chinese sausage and silvers of soft braised pork in each mouthful. For less than ten dollars, one could buy a comforting rice dish and a hot drink for a rainy day pick-me-up. Of course, no meal is ever complete without dessert. To round up the satisfying combination of homey, moist rice, and a hot drink, an ah bo leng (sweet glutinous rice dumpling) in yam and pumpkin cream should do the trick. Priced at $4.80, diners could probably do with more yam and pumpkin cream, as the serving size was a tad small. Besides, there was only one ah bo leng, which means diners who are sharing have to either fight for the solitary dumpling, or be extremely courteous and give up their portion. Credit however, is given to the yam and pumpkin cream for its smooth and creamy consistency that is packed with true pumpkin flavour.
Flavvors seems like a good alternative to cha chan teng (Hongkong Cafés) in Singapore as the prices from other outlet can be a bit on the high side. It has a good mix of soups, sides, appetisers, rice and noodle dishes, desserts and drinks on its menu for prices that will make you grin from ear to ear. Besides, the ambience and décor is pretty classy for a heartland location. The dining experience in Flavvors is can be described as savouring home-style dishes in a stylish ambience that definitely won’t hurt your pocket.
